St. John’s, N.L., delays municipal election because of Canada Post strike

ST. JOHN’S — The City of St. John’s has rescheduled its municipal election by several days because of the strike at Canada Post.

Officials said in a news release Monday the vote will take place on Oct. 8 instead of Oct. 2.

The release says the move will give more time for residents to vote and for officials to prepare for a rise in in-person voting.

In the meantime, the city has launched a web portal allowing residents to check the status of their mail-in ballots, which had to be returned by Sept. 24.

The city says it worked with Canada Post and union members to retrieve vote-by-mail kits from postal facilities, but it says there may still be ballots in the mail system.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers launched the strike last week after Ottawa announced it would allow the Crown corporation to take bold steps to shore up its struggling finances, including terminating daily door-to-door delivery.
