St Johnstone midfielder David Wotherspoon named in Canada’s World Cup squad

St Johnstone midfielder David Wotherspoon is celebrating a call-up to Canada’s World Cup squad.

The 32-year-old was named in his national side’s final 26-man group that will travel to Qatar for the finals this month.

It marks a remarkable comeback after the player spent almost a year battling back to fitness from a cruciate knee ligament injury that he feared could mean missing out on a World Cup dream.

Wotherspoon suffered the injury last November and only made his return to action when he came off the bench against Livingston on October 15.

Now, he’ll be in the mix to play in Qatar when Canada face Belgium in their first group game on November 23, and then take on Croatia and Morocco.

The Saints star grew up in Aberargie and Bridge of Earn but qualifies for Canada through his mother, who was born in Winnipeg.

He played for Scotland up to Under-21 level but was called up by Canada for the first time in 2018 and has since gone on to earn ten caps.
