A stalker pulled a sword from his trousers and waved it at his ex and others attending a house party. Binny Sharif has been in prison on remand after the terrifying incident in Middlesbrough in June.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the 23-year-old was subject to police bail and under conditions not to contact his former partner when he attended a house party where she was at. The pair argued and he left but returned soon afterwards and pulled a sword from his trousers – waving it at those at the gathering.

Sharif had been in an ‘on-off’ relationship with the woman when he began accusing her of cheating, the Middlesbrough court heard. There were two incidents where their arguments led to Sharif assaulting the woman.

In the first incident of physical violence, Shariff repeatedly pushed her back causing her to fall into the bath. She didn’t suffer any injuries.

In another attack, he accused her of speaking to other men and pinned her down on the bed. Tonicha Allen, prosecuting, said the woman tried to end her relationship with the defendant which he was unable to accept.

She said: “He stalked her following their break up. He waited at the end of her road, followed her on foot when she left the house.” She added that he showed up at her place of work.

He also shouted abuse at her, calling her a “w****”. During one incident he made threats towards her, saying he “would do her house in and smash it up”.

He attended outside her workplace and when confronted he claimed he didn’t know she worked there. “He had been pacing up and down the street,” Ms Allen said.

Sharif showed up at her home in the early hours of the morning, knocking on her window and kicked at her front door. She told him he needed to leave but he picked up a wooden block and threw it through the ground floor window.

As a result of the incident she contacted the police and he was arrested. While on police bail, and under conditions not to contact her, he attended a party where she was present.

The pair were heard arguing and Sharif left but returned and “pulled a large sword from his trousers” outside. He waved the sword at others attending the party who feared for their safety, Teesside Crown Court heard.

In a victim impact statement, the woman says she feels anxious to leaver her own home. She said: “I’m a bit of a mess at the moment… I want him to leave me alone so I can get on with my life.”

Following the incident at the house party, Sharif was remanded in custody until his court appearance on Monday, December 22. He had no previous convictions at the time of the offending.

Shariff admitted two counts of common assault, affray, stalking and possession of a bladed article. Nicci Houghton, mitigating, said: “His time in prison has not been pleasant. He has found it a most difficult experience. He does want to make positive change in his life.”

Sharif, of Egmont Road, Middlesbrough, was handed a two year sentence suspended for two years. He must complete 26 accredited programme sessions, 20 rehabilitation requirement days and 200 hours of unpaid work. A restraining order was also made.
