Stoke-on-Trent estate to finally get new post office – inside this shop

Families across a sprawling Stoke-on-Trent estate will soon have a post office – when a new facility opens up inside a shop. Abbey Hulton has been without a provision since the branch on Abbots Road shut in January.

Now the facility will open up inside the Shop Locally store, also on Abbots Road, with a launch planned for next month. Post Office bosses say a counter will run alongside the convenience shop.

And staff at the store say it’s a much-needed facility for the neighbourhood. The post office counter will run from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5.30pm and 9am until 2.30pm on Saturdays.

Cherry Nimmakayala, who works at the shop, says families have been asking when the post office counter will open. Cherry, whose brother owns the store, said: “People have had to travel to Milton and Birches Head after the post office closed. Everybody seems really happy that one is opening here and people have been asking about it.”

Meanwhile Stoke-on-Trent Central Jo Gideon has welcomed the facility opening. She said: “When the Abbey Hulton Post Office closed I received numerous messages from concerned residents and I wasted no time in reaching out to the Post Office to emphasise the significance of having a post office in our community. I am delighted to announce that I have received confirmation that the Post Office will reopen in July 2023.

It’s set to launch in July

“Customers would access Post Office services at a low-screened, open-plan, modern serving point that’s part of the retail counter.”

Karl Haddon, Post Office Network Provision Lead, added: “We are delighted to soon be restoring a Post Office to this area as we know how important a Post Office is to a community. The branch’s opening hours will make it convenient for customers to visit.”
