Storm Claudia to batter Stoke-on-Trent with 51mph winds and 31-hours of rain

Two weather warnings are now in place

Forecasters have issued a further weather warning for North Staffordshire – with the area set to be drenched by more than 30 hours of rain and blasted by strong winds. Today the Met Office has added a yellow warning for wind across Stoke-on-Trent, the Moorlands and Newcastle to join the rain alert already in place.

It comes as meteorologists reckon North Staffordshire will be drenched by roughly 31 hours of consecutive rainfall – including around 23 hours where it’s ‘heavy’. Now a fresh alert has been issued for Friday, which is shaping up to be a very bleak day across the county as Storm Claudia looks to smash its way over the UK.

Elsewhere and an amber rain alert has been put in place going from Wales, taking in the Midlands and wrapping around Peterborough. Back in the Potteries and as it stands a yellow warning for rain will run from 6am tomorrow (November 14) until Saturday (November 15).

Today and an yellow warning for wind has been put in place that will start at noon on Friday and finish at 11.59pm tomorrow night. The current Met Office forecast across Stoke-on-Trent, the Moorlands and Leek is a very bleak one.

As it stands light rain will start at around 1am and then turn heavy at 3am. Those heavy downpours will last until around 3am the following day when it will then turn light through to roughly 9am.

In addition to the heavy rain winds are expected to reach around 51mph – which will mean it won’t feel warmer than 5C and will feel like 1C in the early evening.

In the Moorlands and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council says tomorrow’s outdoor market on Greyhound Walk in Cheadle will be cancelled due to the expected conditions. A spokesperson said: “If you’re heading to the area there are lot of local independent shops and cafes to visit.”

Storm Claudia, named by the Spanish Meteorological Service due to ongoing impacts in Canary Islands, is expected to bring extreme conditions to these shores. Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “Storm Claudia will bring very heavy rainfall to a large swathe of central and southern England and Wales on Friday into Saturday. This rain will become slow moving, and some areas could see up to a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours.

“Much of this will fall on saturated ground, increasing the chances of flooding and contributing to the Amber warnings we have issued. Within the Amber warning areas, some could see in excess of 150mm accumulate during the event, with 60-80mm fairly widely. Gusty winds in the northwest of England and northwest Wales is an additional hazard, with 60-70mph gusts possible in exposed places within the warning area.”

The strong winds will continue through to the early hours of Saturday in North Staffordshire before losing strength, but remaining in the twenties. Sunday is set to be dry and calm and spells the start of cooler conditions with temperatures not getting out of single figures.

The start of next week will be dry but will get continuously colder and by Wednesday it will feel like -2C.
