Storm Eunice: Royal Mail suspends postal services across Suffolk as red warning poses ‘danger to life’

Royal Mail postal services have been suspended in parts of the UK today, due to the bad weather caused by Storm Eunis.

A major incident has been declared across Suffolk with residents being told to stay at home.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “In areas for which the Met Office has issued a red warning, we have had no choice but to suspend deliveries and close our delivery offices.

“In areas covered by an amber warning, we are assessing risk based on local knowledge, and will keep services running where possible.

“We will be reviewing the situation throughout the day, while continuing to prioritise the safety of our staff and customers.”

A red weather warning is currently in place across Suffolk, as wind speeds reach highs of 80mph.

There is mass disruption to transport services across the county and many homes have been left without power due to the fierce winds.

Millions of people have been urged to stay at home for the day due to safety fears over the impact of Eunice, one of the worst storms to hit the UK in a generation.

Across the UK tens of thousands of homes have been left without power, while flights, trains and ferry services have been suspended, and roads, schools and businesses have shut as potentially record-breaking gusts of more than 120mph have been recorded in the most exposed areas.

Even though the first of the Met Office’s two ultra rare “red” weather warnings expired at midday affecting the south west of England and south Wales, a second remains in place until 3pm across the East of England and London due to the combination of high tides, strong winds and storm surge.

But attention is already turning to the impact beyond Friday afternoon, with further disruption to travel and more weather warnings issued for Saturday.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote on Twitter: “We should all follow the advice and take precautions to keep safe.”
