Storm Floris in full attack-mode (updated)

The amber weather warning for gales has impacted in Stornoway with roads covered in rubbish and debris, outdoor equipment quickly being disassembled, and football matches postponed.

A tree has fallen on Willowglen Road just outside the Cabarfeidh Hotel, it’s now being dealt with by a team of CnES maintenance workers.

And  pupils have been warned that the delivery of SQA results will be delayed due to widespread disruption caused by Storm Floris.

The Scottish Qualification Authority said that the Royal Mail has confirmed delivery of results to the Outer Hebrides, Orkney, and Shetland will be delayed.

In a statement the SQA added that further localised delays to deliveries may occur at short notice due to the ongoing server weather. “If any affected candidates wish to know their results, they should contact their school or college in the first instance who should be able to help them.

“Alternatively, learners can submit an enquiry via our website at https://www.sqa.org.uk/learnerenquiry and their query will be responded to by our team after 12noon on Tuesday 5 August.

Certificates are being sent out to candidates across the country by first-class post.

Earlier, Musician Sarah MacAskill uploaded to The Hebridean Hub Facebook page looking for volunteers to help the Stramash Festival crew take down their marquee which was up for the weekend festival at Willowglen green. The festival luckily took place in spells of sunshine and calm wind, while today seems to be the challenge of disassembling equipment.

Another post made by NHS Western Isles is warning residents that the warning has been extended to 11pm, then going into a yellow warning from 11pm until 11:59pm.

The Lewis and Harris Football Association has also announced the postponement of two matches that were scheduled to take place tonight. The fixtures between Ness and Point in the Moldova Lewis Cup league, as well as Harris versus United in the Lewis and Harris league, have both been called off.

Businesses in town advertised that they would be working from home for the day until the amber warning passes. Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative (WICCI) published a post on their Facebook page to let supporters and followers know they will still be able to be contacted today, but will not be in the office.

The wind is due to gradually calm down after 3pm.

Power cuts are continuing to affect areas of Eriskay, North Uist, Laxdale and Benside.

SSEN’s Director of Customer Operations for the north of Scotland, Andy Smith, says:  “Storm Floris is the strongest summer storm we’ve seen in a very long time, and it’s causing significant disruption to power supplies today.

“At the height of summer, we’ve mounted an operation that’s comparable in size to the ones we mobilise when a storm hits during the depths of winter, but the sustained nature of these damaging winds means some affected customers may be without power overnight.

“I’d like to thank customers for their patience today, and I want to reassure our customers that we’ve got hundreds of additional team members working to get people reconnected. As soon as it’s been safe to do so, they’ve quickly set about repairing network damage.

“Remember – you can report faults to us by calling 105 at any time, or via the Power Track website or app. And please – if you come across any network damage, stay well back and inform us immediately.”
