Street cordoned off after Royal Mail van crashes into home sparking 999 response

A quiet residential street was cordoned off after a delivery van reportedly crashed into a house.

Cleveland Police were called to Mendip Road in Billingham on Tuesday, just after 4.20pm, following reports of a one vehicle collision involving a van and a property. Witnesses reported that a Royal Mail delivery van had reversed into a home on the street.

Shortly after police arrived on the scene, two fire engines from Cleveland Fire Brigade arrived from Billingham and Stockton. A cordon was also erected to prevent vehicles from accessing part of the street while emergency services dealt with the fall-out of the crash.

Although there was no fire or casualties reported, a spokesperson for the fire service said crews were at the scene on ‘protective standby’. Residents on the street reported being evacuated from their homes and that the house was being inspected for a possible gas leak following the crash, however authorities have not confirmed this.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said they were called to “a one vehicle collision involving a van and a property reported around 4.10pm. There were no injuries.”

A picture from the scene showed the rear of a red Royal Mail delivery van in the property, having smashed a window and knocking down a brick wall. Police confirmed that no one was injured during the incident.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “We were called to an incident on 25/07/2023 at 16.21 on Mendip Road in Billingham. Two fire engines in attendance from Billingham and Stockton. Road traffic collision involving one van, no fire and no casualties involved. Crews were at the scene on protective standby. We got the stop call at 18.32.”

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “We are aware of the incident and will be supporting the police in their enquiries.”
