Strikes latest: Planes, trains and post set for major disruption – as drivers advised on best time to travel | UK News

Several popular routes blighted with traffic jams – as AA advises drivers to be ‘like Father Christmas’

Several popular routes have been blighted with traffic jams this afternoon as millions of people begin their Christmas journeys.

Collisions on the M1, as well as part of the M25 being closed due to flooding, are just some of the incidents that have caused delays.

In its latest traffic update, the AA has reported problems across the network at the following locations:

  • M1 near Toddington Services
  • A12 and A120 into Colchester
  • M3/A303 interchange in Basingstoke
  • Along the M4 including Hambrook and west of Newport in Wales
  • M5 in Exeter
  • M6 at Walsall
  • M11 near Stanstead Airport
  • M42 at Solihull
  • M55 flooding
  • M60 near Eccles
  • M90 Queensferry in Scotland

The AA said it has attended 9,000 breakdowns so far and the organisation’s president urged drivers to be “like Father Christmas”.

“The wet weather has played a role in adding to congestion on the roads, which were already busier due to the ongoing rail strikes,” said Edmund King.

“Some of these breakdowns could have been avoided by drivers carrying out essential checks before they venture out.

“Much like Father Christmas, it’s worth making a list and checking it twice, as you’ll want to find out if your car will be naughty or nice. That way you’ll know if you’re coming to town.”

The travel woes come as National Highways workers in London and the South East continue their strike action.

The workers, who plan, design, build, operate and maintain the roads, are following action by colleagues in Yorkshire & Humber, north-west and north-east England.
