Suits pokes fun at Meghan Markle’s life as a royal with a cheeky reference

Suits fans who were hoping Meghan Markle would reprise her role as Rachel Zane and make a cameo on the show’s final season got the next best thing — a cheeky reference to her royal life.

The 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex played the paralegal-turned-lawyer on the show’s first seven seasons until she retired from acting following her royal engagement to Prince Harry.

When she left the USA legal drama after the season seven finale, writers had Rachel and her husband Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) move to Seattle to start their own law offices, but her character’s memory is still alive and well.

Never forgotten: Suits writers made a clever reference to Meghan Markle’s royal life on Wednesday night’s episode of the USA legal drama

Mike returned to the show on last night’s episode, and while Rachel wasn’t with him, viewers got to enjoy a hilarious reference to her success when he was asked how she was doing.

‘If I told you how good, you probably wouldn’t believe me,’ he said.

The official Suits Twitter account shared a GIF of the scene with a wink emoji on Wednesday, writing: ‘Turns out Rachel is doing REALLY well.’

Unsurprisingly, fans loved the joke and took to the comments of the tweet to praise the show’s writers for the clever reference to the beloved character.

‘Awe that’s super cute actually. I hope she sees it,’ one person wrote, while another agreed: ‘We probably wouldn’t believe him.’

‘We know,’ someone else tweeted, ‘she’s married to our UK Prince Charming.’

The show’s only half-way through the ninth and final season, meaning there are plenty of chances for there to be even more references to Meghan.

It’s been an exciting time for the Duchess of Sussex, who celebrated a year of marriage and welcomed her first child this year.

Last month, Patrick, 37, opened up about how they are making sure his on-screen wife is still a part of the show without her being seen.

‘For Mike, this is just a trip to New York,’ he told Entertainment Tonight. ‘There’s phone calls with Rachel saying goodbye and I love you, and, you know, I think there’s some obvious acknowledgment that she’s still there and a part of the show.

‘This is just a way for him to come see his friends one last time,’ he added.

Meghan was also featured heavily in a teaser trailer for the final season of the legal drama, which included flashbacks to some of her best moments on the series.

The sentimental clip took fans all the way back to Rachel and Mike’s first meeting and included a scene from their nuptials, which aired in April 2018, just a month before the former actress’ real-life royal wedding to Prince Harry.

During Meghan’s first joint interview with Harry following their engagement in 2017, she said she didn’t see her retirement from acting to focus on her royal duties as ‘giving anything up.’

‘It’s a new chapter,’ she said. ‘And also, keep in mind, I’d been working on my show for seven years. So we were very, very fortunate to be able to have that sort of longevity on a series.

‘And for me, once we hit the 100-episode marker, I thought, You know what, I have ticked this box, and I feel really proud of the work I’ve done there. And now it’s time to work as a team with [Prince Harry].’
