Supper from the sky: Drone trial delivers school lunches to islands | Scotland

Drone technology is being developed to help ensure pupils at some of Scotland’s most remote island and mainland schools receive hot meals direct from the heavens.

In what is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, Argyll and Bute council has partnered with a specialist company to trial the drones in delivering school meals.

It is potentially a game-changer for the communities scattered across the inner Hebrides and remote mainland glens, and offers “quite staggering” possibilities to improve services to them, according to Robin Currie, the council leader.

Argyll and Bute, Scotland’s second largest local authority area, has 23 inhabited islands as well as many mainland villages that are distant, awkward journeys from Oban and Lochgilphead, the biggest towns.
