Taking on the barefoot relay for Hasti

A ROYAL Mail worker from Darlington has joined a legion of fundraisers taking part in a nation-wide barefoot relay walk.

The 700-mile walk, from Land’s End to Edinburgh, is inspired by Major Chris Brannigan – aka the Barefoot Solider – who completed the route solo this summer in honour of his poorly daughter Hasti.

The youngster suffers from the rare illness, Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, and the Hope for Hasti charity was set up by Major Brannigan to fund research into the illness.

Samantha Steer 41, of Darlington, is completing leg 103 of the relay from Darlington Town Hall to Aycliffe Village.

She said “I’m honoured to take on this challenge to raise awareness and funds for CdLS, and to follow in the footsteps of Major Chris Brannigan, who completed the entire gruelling 700-mile challenge in order to raise money for research and hopefully a treatment for his daughter and other children living with CdLS. I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received and to everyone who has donated.”

In total, 125 volunteers are taking part in the barefoot walk relay and hope to raise £20,000 between them.
