Teen left without SQA exam results after post left in rain overnight

Lucy Wallace, 19, and her sister Millie, from Clydebank, were left waiting by the door yesterday morning and afternoon.

And when the postman arrived at 2.30pm, empty-handed, Lucy describes her mum’s fury at hearing what had happened.

Lucy said: “The postman came to my front door and spoke with my mum and she had asked if he had our SQA certificates and he said ‘No’.

“My mum was like, ‘Could you please just double-check your bag, because we’ve not had anything’. He checked his satchel and nothing.

“My mum was saying, ‘Well, what’s going on?’ And the postman said ‘I’m not too sure. I can try and get more information.’

“By this point, my mum wasn’t happy, she said ‘Look, just be honest, where are the certificates?’

“We need the results because myself and my younger sister were in college and we’ve got offers and we need to prove that we’ve passed our previous course.

“It was then that the postman said that there was an incident the previous night at the local depot where two pallets of post were left out in the rain and got damaged and pretty much destroyed.

“For it to be just left out in the rain, just the callousness of the disregard, it’s painful.”

Lucy says she needs her results to get into her next courseLucy says she needs her results to get into her next course (Image: Colin Mearns) Lucy and Millie both need their results to confirm their places in their next college courses, and Lucy says she is not the only one affected by this.

She added: “My sister’s boyfriend, he didn’t get his results. His brother didn’t get his results. One of our friends from college actually messaged us asking if we’d had a result, so it’s not just us.

“There’s a good few people who are missing their results.”

When trying to get in contact with the depot which had already closed, Lucy got put through to a call centre in England and the staff member didn’t know it was exam result day.

Lucy said: “It’s just the anxiety. What if someone’s mistake doesn’t let me into my course?

“I’ve never been so frustrated and anxious in my life. This is just another level and you’re just sort of stuck waiting, you can’t contact the SQA today because people will be submitting their appeals, so you’ll be lucky if you can.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We are immensely proud of the role we play in delivering exam results for students up and down the country. While the vast majority of results were delivered correctly and on time, some results were water-damaged on a delivery round in Clydebank. We are investigating and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused by this isolated incident.”

Royal Mail advises that anyone with any concerns should contact the SQA about this on the Candidate Advice Line (0345 279 1000).
