If you want to earn some extra cash over Christmas, this might be a good place to look for a temporary job.
A number of firms have vacancies in the North East, including Royal Mail, Fenwick, Next, WHSmith and Pizza Hut.
The roles on offer include mail sorters and sales advisors, with the majority available in the retail sector as the busy shopping season approaches.

Royal Mail – seasonal mail sorters
Royal Mail is taking on seasonal mail sorters at its Tyneside Mail Centre in Gateshead.
The group says: “Unsurprisingly, Christmas is the busiest time of year at Royal Mail. And with so many parcels and letters flowing through our warehouse, we always need a few thousand extra hands. Every year over the holiday season, temporary flexible workers from all walks of life help us to get everything where it needs to go.
“As a mail sorter, you’ll be unloading mail and parcels from our vans, moving them through our warehouses and ensuring that they arrive at their destination safely. During a single shift, you could sort over a million items with your team. It’s a very important role so flexibility, commitment and enthusiasm are key.”
Salary: £11.40 p/h (days) to £13.70 p/h (nights)

Night: -Monday to Saturday or Monday-Friday & Sunday, 11.30pm to 6.45am

TK Maxx – Christmas temp
The department store in Newcastle is hiring temporary retail associates. Various hours are available, Monday to Sunday.
The advert says: “When you join TJX as a retail associate, you’ll be part of a close-knit team. In fact, right from your very first day with us, you’ll be welcomed as part of our retail family.
“This is also a great learning environment. Our stock changes by the day, and we like to make sure our retail associates get plenty of variety too – you might be on the cash registers one moment, guiding customers on the shop floor the next.”

New Look – seasonal sales advisor
The retailer is seeking seasonal sales advisor in Newcastle. The closing date for applications is December 1.
The job advert says: “Christmas is our busiest time of the year – this is where you come in.
“We’re looking for extraordinary seasonal sales advisors, with sociable personalities that love to talk to our customers.
“You’ll help them look good and feel great, by providing advice and recommendations, drawing up the latest trends in fashion from across the high street, and from celebrities and influencers on social media. You’ll help create the ultimate Christmas shopping experience for every one of our customers.”

River Island – seasonal sales advisors
The fashion retailer is looking for seasonal sales advisors to work in its Newcastle store for eight to 16 hours per week. This could include evenings and weekends.
You will need to be able to work over the Christmas period which will include Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. You can apply here.
Next – Christmas support team
Next needs helpers at its Eldon Square store for the busy festive period.
They want temporary staff who can work on average 16.5 hours per week for six weeks. You could earn between £6.55 to £8.91 per hour.
The company says: “We need support in the run up to Christmas for between 3-12 weeks’ work. This will include our busiest time of year and the Next Sale. The first day of the Next Sale in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be Monday 27th December.”

WHSmith – Christmas staff
The High Street retailer is recruiting for sales assistants for its stores in Newcastle and Gateshead Metrocentre.
It says: “We’re offering flexible hours. Mostly weekends with more shifts available in the final run-up to Christmas day.
“You’ll be paid weekly, so you’ll be sure to have enough money to buy all the presents you need to. Plus, if you do a great job, there may even be the chance of a permanent opportunity in the future.”

Pizza Hut – Christmas team members
It’s that time of year when Pizza Hut restaurants get really busy.
Their advert says: “We’re looking for team members who want to work somewhere they can belong over the Christmas period (anything from 2 – 8 weeks). Working alongside our existing teams to ensure that at the busiest time of year, we are able to keep the restaurant running as efficiently as Santa’s workshop.”
The salary will be up to £8.91 an hour plus tips. There are vacancies at Pizza Hut branches at The Gate in Newcastle, the Metrocentre in Gateshead, Eden Terrace in Durham. Apply here by searching under seasonal jobs at the restaurants.
Fenwick – sales advisors
The famous Newcastle department store looking for temporary sales advisors to work various hours and flexible shifts, including weekends. The pay would be around £9.18 per hour.
