Tesco and Sainsbury’s shoppers warned about what they do at the checkout

Shoppers who frequently visit Tesco or Sainsbury’s have been issued a warning about how they pay for their shopping.

People are being advised to get themselves a Clubcard or Nectar card – or risk paying up to 50% more for their groceries.

Tesco Clubcard Prices enable its loyalty card members to get 50% off select products for a limited time.

Or if you’re a Sainsbury’s customer, you could be missing out up to 30% off the same items as someone who has a Nectar card.

To get the reductions, you need to use your Clubcard or Nectar card in stores.

It means if you don’t have your card on you, or forget to bring it with you to the till, you face paying higher prices for the same item.

Tesco Clubcard offers change every few weeks and are the same for all shoppers – so it isn’t based on what you spend.

Items are labelled as having a Clubcard Price in stores and online with yellow stickers.

To get the discounts, you simply need to swipe your Clubcard at the till of self-service machine when paying.

The money off will then automatically be applied to your bill.

Tesco says its Clubcard Prices are available on over 4,500 items across its stores and online.

The Mirror checked its website to find some examples of the discounts it is offering and found the money off ranged from 10% to 50%.

The promotion is ongoing and the reductions Clubcard Prices offer change every few weeks.

Here are some of the reductions currently available:

  • Tesco Stonebaked Spinach & Ricotta Pizza 314G; £1.75 instead of £3.50 (50%) – save £1.75

Sainsbury’s Nectar Prices work in a similar way but they’re based on your personalised shopping habits.

This means, in theory, you should see discounts on goods you would normally buy.

You can see what offers are available to you through the Nectar app – but to apply them, you need to use the SmartShop scan and go devices to do your shop.

These self-scan gadgets are available at the front of stores and once you’ve completed your shop, you’ll need to checkout at the special self-service machines.

The frequency of price changes range from one week to a few months, depending on the offer.

Here are some of the Nectar Prices we found today when we checked the Nectar app – but again, they’ll vary between shoppers depending on what you buy:

  • Sainsbury’s Clumping Cat Litter Natural Clay 8L; £3.28 instead of £4 (18%) – save 72p
  • Mars Chocolate Bars x4 39.4g; £1.03 instead of £1.25 (17%) – save 23p
  • Walkers Ready Salted Crisps 6x25g; £1.31 instead of £1.70 (22%) – save 39p
  • Sainsbury’s Yorkshire Puddings x4 168g; £1.16 instead of £1.60 (27%) – save 44p
  • Sainsbury’s Baby Corn and Mange Tout 200g; £1.44 instead of £1.75 (17%) – save 26p
  • Schweppes Lemonade 2L; 82p instead of £1 (15%) – save 18p

  • Sainsbury’s Mature Grated Cheddar 500g; £2.16 instead of £3 (28%) – save 84p

Of course, these discounts are most relevant for loyal Tesco and Sainsbury’s shoppers who don’t shop anywhere else.

You may be able to get these goods cheaper elsewhere still by comparing prices, or downshifting branded goods to a supermarket own-brand.
