Tesco delivery van smashed by waves in South West storm as it attempts delivery

This is the moment in the South West where a Tesco driver was caught battling massive waves and they were determined to make their food delivery despite the heavy wind and rain. The food delivery driver was seen in Port Mellon in Cornwall at around 4pm on Sunday as waves were rising up and crashing over onto the road.

This came after the Met Office issued a yellow warning of heavy wind and rain. The weather experts warned that some areas could see as much as 30mm of rain in a nine to 12-hour period – although there is potential for as much as 50mm to 80mm fall on higher ground such as Dartmoor.

With the South West lashed with downpours and high winds, the Met Office said more rain is expected on Monday. It has extended its yellow weather warning for rain until 9 am tomorrow and said flooding is a real possibility. The Met Office said: “Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely.”

An eyewitness said the driver timed his run, waited for the waves to subside, then made a dash for it. But they almost came unstuck when they had to slow for a flooded section of road and the sea raced back towards them.

As seen in the video, the determined driver was hit by the ferocious waves but luckily made a safe escape onto higher ground. The witness quipped “every little helps”, as CornwallLive reports.

They continued: “The waves were smashing up over the road and seaweed was landing on the roofs! The brave driver waited for the sea to die down and the flood water to go down then went for it!

“Saltwater smashing up over his bonnet but he was committed. He obviously didn’t want his delivery to be late.”

It comes as dramatic video footage shows huge waves crashing into the sea wall at Meadfoot Beach in Torquay. The full power of nature has been on display this evening as high winds and heavy rain lashes the region.

The spectacle was filmed from the safety of flats high above Meadfoot Sea Road. It shows the road closed and people standing back from the raging spray.

The waves can be seen rising high into the air and crashing down on vehicles metres away. The wind can be heard billowing loudly. Both ends of the seafront road seem to be bearing the worst of the impact.

Some motorists can be seen turning their vehicles around and heading back to safety inland. It comes after a weather warning was issued for the region.

One witness said: “The waves are coming right over the sea wall and have flooded the car park. The whole road is flooded. At the other end of the road is a SwisCo van stopping cars from driving down. The waves must be 20ft as they’re reaching the other side of the road.”
