Thai Army denies POW abuse allegations, invites ICRC to inspect detention conditions

In response to Cambodian claims of mistreatment, the Royal Thai Army reaffirms its compliance with the Geneva Convention and international law, calling the accusations false and offering access to the ICRC and OHCHR for transparent inspections.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army confirms adherence to international standards in the treatment of prisoners of war and allows ICRC inspection, emphasizing that Cambodian allegations constitute distortion.

Regarding the case where the Cambodian side claims that Thai soldiers physically harmed prisoners of war prior to repatriation following a ceasefire agreement between the two parties, Saturday (2 August 2025), Major General Winthai Suvaree, Army spokesperson, clarified the facts as follows:

1.Such allegations constitute distortions from the Cambodian side, which are not true.

2.Despite the sudden ceasefire agreement, the conflict situation in the area remains tense, and the use of weapons has not completely ceased. Therefore, under international law, military procedures for detaining individuals in such circumstances can still be conducted in accordance with the principles of the Geneva Convention.

3.The Royal Thai Army is fully prepared to allow international organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to inspect the conditions of prisoners of war under Thai custody, which are conducted in full accordance with the procedures and criteria of the Geneva Convention. Should there be concerns regarding human rights, organizations such as the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and ICRC may submit requests for inspection through channels specified in international law as usual.

4.Thailand confirms that the Royal Thai Army has conducted all procedures strictly within the framework of international law and practices.
