The biggest supermarket food price increases including vegetable oil rising by 65% and pasta by 60%

The price of daily food items has seen a huge rise and become stark to Herts residents as well as millions across the UK. Shoppers have seen items increase by significant amounts including vegetable oil rising 65 per cent and pasta 60 per cent in a year.

According to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), other huge increases include the price of tea rising by 46 per cent. Chips were up 39 per cent, bread rose by 38 per cent and biscuits were up 34 per cent.

However, some items had fallen in price including orange juice falling by nine per cent, minced beef was down seven per cent, sugar by 0.3 per cent and rice by 0.2 per cent. The ONS looked at 1.5million online prices over the 12-months to September 2022, with the figures representing the difference in lowest prices.

It comes after Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation – the main measure of how much goods and services have risen in price – is at a 40-year high of 10.1 per cent, The Mirror reports. Food and energy were the largest contributors for the jump in inflation in the 12 months to September. Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose by 14.5 per cent.

The rise in the cost of groceries has been accelerated by the war in Ukraine, which has led animal feed, fertiliser and vegetable oil prices to be pushed up. The ONS cautioned that one limitation of its latest data release is product availability.

As some items were not always available in store or online meaning that the next lowest-price option was used as a substitution. National statistician Sir Ian Diamond said: “While the recent spike in inflation began with energy prices, today’s fresh insights using a new innovative data source show they are now filtering through to other important items, with the cheapest price of some staple food items rising by around two-thirds in the last year.

“Figures from our near real time survey of people show that while rises in food and energy costs are affecting many people across the country, those who are disabled, from certain ethnic minority backgrounds and renters are among those struggling the most.

“With rises in the cost of living at the forefront of many people’s minds, our new, almost real time, data showing just how prices are changing and shining a light on how different groups are affected have never been more important.”
