Based on Jack London’s adventure – The Call of the Wild is the story of St. Bernard and Scotch Collie named Buck, a dog who really doesn’t fit well with humankind and progress – but rather …the wild.
Narrated by the same orator as Rick Deckard’s voice over in 1982, Buck finds himself headed north to Alaska – Dawson (city) oddly enough – where he goes to work for the Royal Mail. After ascending to lead his mail sled team, the Royal Mail is replaced by the telegram, and Buck et all are sold.
By the time our narrator shows his face as the lead John Thornton, we’re well on our adventure and into Buck’s life as the lead character. Both Buck and Thornton feel the call to further north – simply to see what is going on. Ford’s man looks to honour his lost son, and disintegrated marriage – where young Buck finds the freedom that Ford due to say, his years and mileage, can’t escape.
Throw a little prospecting for the “prospect” of gold, and you have a dramatic arc (to be raided if you will) for the actual plot beyond Buck, and utility for Ford to get into a punch up at the end.
This is a movie for kids and a throwback to the story telling days of the 1950s. With a lot of CGI that doesn’t undercut the flick the way I thought it would. The Call of the Wild runs in Mile Zero this week, starts a three week run of family movies in Dawson Creek with My Spy and Onwards.
