A FIRST Class stamp could cost more than £1 for the first time unless Saturday deliveries are axed, Royal Mail warns.
The price went up 10p to 95p in March, while the cost of 2nd Class stamp rose to 68p.
Royal Mail boss Keith Williams predicted a “considerable” increase if the six-day delivery service is to continue.
He said: “You’re delivering the same number of letters over six days when you could be doing it over five.
“So that is forcing up stamp prices.”
Business Secretary Grant Shapps told a select committee last week that he would not approve any plans to axe weekend letter deliveries.
The price of a 1st Class stamp has never previously exceeded £1.
