The European city 80 minutes from London with the best Christmas market

As winter looms and the countdown to Christmas has begun, for many the thought of mulled wine, bratwürst and mince pies comes to mind. Cities burst into colour at Christmas as markets take over the streets.

Starting in the 15th century in Germany, the Christmas market has taken over and you are bound to have one nearby. But, there is one magical market that has been given the coveted top spot by The Times, Cologne’s Markt der Engel.

Cologne is just 80 minutes from London and with flights from as little as £30 it is a no brainer this festive season. The city itself has several Christmas markets for you to enjoy as a long-favoured holiday destination.

Markt der Engel is the largest and oldest in the city and is located in the city centre, beneath the cathedral. There are hundreds of twinkling lights suspended over the market like stars, with angel decorations also above, as it translates to Market of Angels.

There are markets dedicated to mythical gnomes, and to maritime history, complete with sea shanties and pirates. There is also a special area aimed at children.

Nikolausdorf (Saint Nicholas’s village) tells the real story of St Nick, and is located in front of Cologne’s Hahnen gate. The cities Christmassy atmosphere is perfect for all ages with plenty of bars too.
