The family-run Kent restaurant famous for home-cooked roast dinners

Mortimer’s is a family-run restaurant situated between the sea and the high street in Herne Bay. Popular for their all-day breakfast, home-made soups, home-cooked roast dinners and welcoming atmosphere, they have an impressive 5-star food hygiene rating, many loyal customers and enthusiastic guests.

Desserts change daily and their cream teas and home-cooked scones are popular. Afternoon teas can be booked and tables are Instagram-worthy with vintage china, cake stands, and delicious cakes. You can expect a hearty, home-cooked meal in a friendly, homey seaside-themed restaurant if you visit.

The roasts go for £10 for chicken and pork, £11.50 for roast beef and £12.50 for lamb but this varies. They have rave reviews.

Mortimer’s began in 2008, opened by Chantal and Richard Bartlett. As their children grew, they now play a part in the restaurant, and they make a happy team.

Owner Richard said: “Our aim was always to create a friendly environment, where families, visitors or our regular customers can pop in for a cup of tea or coffee and a snack or lunch. Customers will always find a warm, welcoming atmosphere in which to relax and we can also cater for private, evening functions.”

Reviews are majority five-star and gushing. Gwyn P visited 3 weeks ago: “Fantastic home made food. Warm and welcoming family run restaurant. Had a wonderful time at their karaoke evening last night and fantastic Liver and bacon meal today.”

If you’re looking around for a Sunday roast excursion, look no further, as 4 weeks ago, one TripAdvisor veteran said, “Sunday Roast is amazing. We have been many times during the week for the home cooked food. Our first Sunday roast and loved it. Hubby rated the potatoes 5/5 and you should definitely order the cauliflower cheese side. Loved it. Thank you!”

Angela H. came early May and the afternoon tea did not disappoint: “Fantastic service with a smile, even when under pressure. Food was amazing. I would highly recommend and will be coming back for more food in the future.”

A glowing review from Chloe speaks to the welcoming family atmosphere and the above-and-beyond service: “As a family of 6 we had the most beautiful experience, very welcoming family business. I have teenagers, a 4 year old with additional needs, there not many places that I feel comfortable to eat , but they made us feel so welcome and adapted to my son needs.”

Here you can find the menu for breakfast, dinner sides (as dinner changes daily so the menu can be found on the board in restaurant), snacks (with things like omelettes, baguettes, light bites, cakes, sandwiches, and buffets for large groups) and drinks. There’s also a children’s menu.
