The four digit code Royal Mail uses if you miss a delivery and what it means

This festive season, posties have been working hard to deliver all orders to households before Christmas Day.

The Royal Mail strikes saw many residents across the UK waiting longer than they’d have liked to see things arrive. The industrial action came in a dispute over pay and working conditions.

To top it off, some people may have seen their mail not delivered because they weren’t in or didn’t get to the door in time. Anyone who sees the code P739 on a card posted through their door means they will after collect it from the sorting office, reports the Liverpool Echo.

But in some cases, you might be able to organise redelivery. But, after a resident left a ranting note accusing a postie of “pretending” to ring their doorbell with a parcel, he refused to deliver mail to them.

The postman adamantly denied the accusation, and a Royal Mail spokesperson at the time said: “Every single item of mail is important to us. Our postmen and women work extremely hard to deliver to mail to customers across the country, six days a week, in all weathers.

“Thankfully the vast majority of items are securely delivered to customers, but if we believe a customer is not at home, we will attempt to deliver the item to a neighbour and leave a card.

“If we can’t deliver to them, we’ll leave a card and take the item back to the Customer Service Point where customers can either collect it or arrange a redelivery.

“We would advise anyone who has delivery concerns can contact the Royal Mail customer service team.”
