A historic Royal Observer Corps bunker from the 1950s has generated significant interest online after being listed for sale.
The listing reads as follows: “Fantastic opportunity to buy a piece of past war British history. The once in a generation opportunity is to buy a ROC Nuclear Bunker otherwise known as A Royal Observer post.”
The property has also been described to be “in excellent condition, clean, and dry”, and it includes some original items such as an “unused toilet”.
Located 14 feet underground in Wormhill, Derbyshire, on the outskirts of Peak District, the post-war bunker is one of only 1,500 ever built.
The listing added: “This particular site was one of many built in the 1950s and was designed to provide protective accommodation for three observers to survive a nuclear attack, they were expected to report on the nuclear bursts and on the fall out of a nuclear attack.
“Most of these sites were decommissioned and sold off in 1993 and we have been informed that many were bought up by telecom companies and now are sites for mobile phone masts as they were built as telecommunication posts so they are positioned in very favourable locations.
“They were provided with enough food and water for fourteen days and had a landline and radio communications available to them.”
SDL Property Auctions has set a guide price of £15,000, with the bunker scheduled to be auctioned online on Rightmove, on September 26.
Interior photos show a bedroom with curtains, a yellow crushed velvet duvet, a log burner, and a rug. The sleeping area measures 14 by 7 feet, while the storage space is 7 by 2 feet.
The owner has informed that the bunker includes an unused and boxed chemical toilet and recommends servicing the wood-burning stove for safety reasons.
While viewings are available, interested parties can also watch a virtual tour featuring commentary by their national valuer Jim Demitriou, who told the BBC that the sale was likely to exceed the guide price.
“It used to be very unusual until we started selling them about 18 months ago and this is my third one now, so people are seeking me out to sell their nuclear bunkers,” the expert noted.
