‘The infection-linked deaths at QEUH in Glasgow are a tragedy’

I hope we can all agree that the seven infection-linked deaths at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow are a tragedy and should never have happened.

It is essential that the ongoing public inquiry into this matter has all the information it needs to get to the truth of what went wrong.

That must include hearing from the people who were at the top of the Scottish Government when the hospital opened in 2015.

I took the opportunity of raising this matter with the Deputy Prime Minister in the Commons chamber recently.

This is the greatest scandal since devolution began and the families who lost loved ones deserve to know the truth.

Many constituents have contacted me supporting a minimum age for access to social media.

I recently signed a letter to the Prime Minister urging action on this important issue, and I am very pleased that the Government has subsequently launched a consultation on children’s relationship with social media.

I want to hear from as many constituents as possible on this matter, so I have launched a survey to find out what residents of Glasgow West think.

Last September I hosted a successful recruitment fair in Drumchapel in partnership with the local Jobcentre.

The event attracted 134 attendees, and participation from over a dozen employers and organisations offering employment and volunteering opportunities.

Given the success of that fair I am organising a similar event in Partick on Friday, March 6, along with the MP for Glasgow North, Martin Rhodes.

Once again, the fair will be hosted in partnership with the local Jobcentre Plus.

The event is open to anyone actively seeking work, whether that’s a first job or a career move.

A recurring issue raised with me by constituents throughout last year was delays with Royal Mail post deliveries.

I have raised these issues in Parliament and also met with Royal Mail management to discuss the situation.

It was explained to me that the organisation has experienced issues both with staff absence and with recruitment, and I was assured that action was being taken to improve the situation.

Indeed, Royal Mail attended my recruitment fair in Drumchapel last September.

Unfortunately, issues are still being reported to me with constituents advising of the delayed delivery of important letters, including hospital appointments.

I recently met with Blair McDougall MP, the government minister responsible for postal services, to discuss these issues.

I was pleased that the Minister shared my concerns and gave an assurance that he will raise the issues with Royal Mail.

I have also raised the issue with the Scottish Government Health Minister, as it is possible for NHS mail to use a Royal Mail NHS barcode which helps to prioritise mail.

I have been assured that the Scottish Government will work with health boards to encourage the use of this system.
