According to consumer watchdog Which?, over 6,400 bank and building society branches have shut their doors since 2015, averaging about 53 closures each month. Its deputy editor, Sam Richardson, described this as a ‘seismic shift’ in the operation of UK banks.
If your bank is shutting down, there are still several alternatives at your disposal. For example, the Post Office permits you to perform basic banking duties, and with a network of 11,684 branches across the country, they maintain a presence in most towns and cities.
Certain areas will also gain from mobile banking services, where a bus equipped with full bank branch facilities visits places that no longer have a physical branch.
