The Victorian House, on Welholme Road, appears to be on of your top spots of times gone by. In fact, it won the Grimsby Telegraph’s restaurant of the year award in 1996 in part thanks to its selection of English and continental dishes.
GrimsbyLive reader Tracy Crooks said: “The Victorian House on Welholme Road with the original owners was amazing. Sadly it went straight downhill after they sold it on.”
Joanne Chapman said: “The Victorian House was superb. Best food in town.”
Rebecca Jervis added: “Victorian House steaks were superb.”
Another popular choice seems to be Fatty Arbuckles American Diner in Osborne Street, Grimsby.
The stateside cuisine was a hit with punters after it opened up on the former Kwiksave site opposite the back of the-then Post Office.
Melanie Bloomfield was one of the readers to miss the venue. She said: “Fatty Arbuckles had the best ribs ever.”
While Kayleigh Murphy added: “Fatty Arbuckles was great for families.”
Sadly the chain, which opened its first branch in 1991, closed all of its venues by 2006.
Italian Affair on Wellowgate was another hit with GrimsbyLive readers with its traditional pizzas and garlic bread.
Run by brothers Mario and Vito Cataffo it became a Grimsby institution.
Natalia Wortley said: “I had my 13th birthday party there and loved it.”
Jan Cawte added: “The Italian Affair – we loved it there.”
Other popular choices among readers included Chung’s Choice and Littlefield’s as well as Wimpy.
