The plan includes allowing some mail and packages to sit for an extra day instead of processing and moving them immediately – CGWALL USA News

USPS Delivery Times : The U.S. Postal Service is considering swapping some resources that would speed delivery times for most of its customers, but that would come at the expense of those who live in rural and remote locations, according to a report. Washington Post.

“We are trying to save the postal service. Not figuratively, not to advocate anything. We ‘re really trying to save the Postal Service, “Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told the Post.

The plan is part of a larger proposal it hopes to save $3 billion a year. This includes allowing some mail and packages to sit in certain post offices and processing for an extra day for delivery and transferring them immediately. This will allow the USPS to devote more energy to serving the majority of customers who live within a 50-mile radius of the mail processing center.

The USPS says some deliveries on shift will be delayed by a day, but still achieve the goal of delivering everything in five days or less from coast to coast. Already, the idea is motivating the opposition.

This is the second time Postmaster General DeJoy has proposed lower service standards. He could announce a return to delivering mail by horse and small cart, “Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., said in a statement.

The USPS has filed plans to hold public hearings on the proposal, and DeJoy has said there will be no changes until Election Day. DeJoy came under intense criticism four years ago when some of his cost-cutting measures slowed mail delivery around the 2020 election.

Despite the change in distribution and the raising of its prices, the USPS remains in a huge financial valley. It’s on pace to lose more than $7 billion in the 2024 fiscal year, and it lost $6.5 billion in fiscal 2023.
