The Queen looks elegant in pale blue as heads to church near Balmoral Castle

The Queen looked in high spirits as she headed to Crathie Kirk near Balmoral Castle for church today.

The monarch, 93, braved the chilly weather conditions and opted for a pale blue jacket and matching hat which featured floral detail as she attended the Sunday service in the Scottish Highlands.

Her appearance came shortly after she bid farewell to beleaguered Prime Minister Boris Johnson after his short trip, and news emerged of her son Prince Andrew’s blazing row with a senior aide.

Her Majesty was joined at church by other members of the royal family – including her son Prince Charles – who is known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland – and Camilla Duchess of Cornwall.

Camilla flashed a smile for the camera as she was pictured in a green and yellow checkered collared dress and matching moss green-coloured coat.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles, who was pictured not wearing his seat belt, opted for a smart grey suit and striped tie.

The Sunday service comes after a busy period for the Queen, after she joined other members of the royal family in front of huge crowds to take in the annual Highland Games Gathering in the small Aberdeenshire village of Braemar yesterday.

She is patron of the historic event, which takes place a short distance from the royals’ summer residence Balmoral, and she is known to regularly visit.

Receiving a gift of flowers from girls wearing traditional tartan, the royal was again joined by Prince Charles and Camilla – but was also accompanied by Autumn Phillips, and her husband Peter Phillips, who is the son of Princess Anne.

Prince Andrew was today spotted at a golf tournament hours after reports emerged of his furious row with a senior palace aide that forced Prince Charles to order him to apologise.

He walked around the golf course at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club with the men’s and ladies’ captains before watching a tournament between the USA and Britain and Ireland.

Andrew, who is facing intense scrutiny over his friendship with paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, betrayed few of his emotions as he witnessed the action wearing a black suit and a faded grey cap.

Last night a source close to the Duke of York confirmed the row, revealed by the Mail On Sunday, admitting that Andrew had ‘got very cross’.

However, the friend rejected a suggestion from a well-placed royal insider that the Duke had physically assaulted the highly-respected aide, adding: ‘There were heated words on both sides but the altercation was in no way physical.

‘It was a verbal dispute. It was a work-related issue. The Duke got very cross that what he wanted wasn’t possible.’

Prince Charles subsequently heard of the row and asked his brother to say sorry.

The source added: ‘The Duke explained the situation to the Prince of Wales and left it at that. There was no apology because there was nothing to apologise for. The Duke maintains a good relationship with the Prince of Wales.’

A source close to Charles said such an intervention would not be unusual. ‘He is the second most senior member of the family and is known to take action when and where is necessary.

‘Mostly he is well informed and will intervene where it is appropriate to do so.’

Last night, both Buckingham Palace and Clarence House declined to comment on the incident, which happened in recent weeks.

A friend of Andrew’s ex-wife, the Duchess of York, added: ‘The Duke has never assaulted anyone.’

Andrew – who appeared tense during a military ceremony in Belgium yesterday – has spent weeks embroiled in scandal surrounding his friendship with Epstein, who killed himself in prison last month following an arrest over sex trafficking of underage girls

Buckingham Palace has issued strong denials over allegations made by Virginia Roberts Giuffre that she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew when she was 17 years old.

She claims she had sex with Andrew ‘three times, including one orgy’ in London, at Epstein’s home, and at an ‘orgy’ on his private island in the Caribbean.

Speaking outside a court in New York last month, she said he ‘knows what he’s done’, adding: ‘I hope he comes clean about it.’

Friends of the Duke fear the scandal will affect his royal duties and work with charities.

The Queen usually heads to the Scottish retreat of Balmoral every summer and has been seen regularly attending church on Sundays with various members of her family.

She was joined by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their family last month and dressed for the bank holiday heatwave in a bright pink ensemble.

Meanwhile Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and baby Archie will not be making an appearance at Balmoral this year.

Sources close to the couple insist that the decision should not be seen as a ‘snub’. In truth, Harry, 34, only rarely goes up to the Queen’s Deeside estate nowadays, although he did spend every summer there as a child.

The lure of fly fishing in the Dee, picnics and barbecues in the rain and long tramps through the midge-infested highlands around Balmoral have never held that much appeal.

The sources also stressed that now the couple live in Frogmore Cottage on the Queen’s estate at Windsor, they see the monarch much more regularly than most family members anyway. Still, the decision will, inevitably, raise eyebrows among those who see Balmoral as something of a royal three-line whip and an unrivalled chance to spend quality time with the ageing queen.

Charles and Camilla have been staying at Birkhall, their neighbouring estate, for most of July and August, while Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of York and the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their children, Louise and James, have all holidayed with the Queen and Prince Philip.
