The Queen has opened up over her ‘regret’ as she pulls out of another royal event. Prince Charles will step in for the head of state.
The 95 year old monarch is “regretfully unable to commit” to attending the traditional Easter Maundy Thursday church service that was set to take place next week – and Prince Charles will instead take her place.
The Queen has pulled out of attending the annual Maundy Day church service and will be represented for the first time by the Prince of Wales, Buckingham Palace said. It comes after the service was cancelled for two years due to Covid.

In the personal letter last year, she underlined her disappointment that the service will not take place as usual. It read: “I have great pleasure in sending you the Maundy Gift which, unfortunately, I am unable to distribute to you personally.
“This ancient Christian ceremony, which reflects Jesus’s instruction to his Disciples to love one another, is a call to the service of others, something that has been at the centre of my life. I believe it is a call to service for all of us.”
Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper and how Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Easter is a moveable feast and this year will be marked across the weekend of April 16 and 17.
