The Queen’s Royal Christmas gift to palace staff is £6 supermarket treat

The Queen makes sure she treats her staff at Christmas time, and every year they get the same present.

The 95-year-old gives a small gift to each of her 1,500 staff members.

She reportedly follows a tradition which was started by Her Majesty’s grandfather George V.

The monarch presents each member of her workforce with a Christmas pudding – worth £6 – The Mirror reports.

The Royal Family website confirms this, stating: “All members of The Royal Household will receive Christmas presents from The Queen, and Her Majesty will personally hand out presents to some members of The Royal Household at Buckingham Palace and at Windsor Castle.

Staff receive a £6 version of the festive pudding

“Continuing the tradition from her father, King George VI and her grandfather, George V – The Queen also gives Christmas puddings to her staff.

“About 1,500 Christmas puddings paid for by The Queen (through the Privy Purse) are distributed to staff throughout the Palaces, staff in the Court Post Office and Palace police.

“Each pudding is accompanied by a greeting card.”

Historically, Palace staff have received a luxury pud from brands such as Harrods or royal grocer Fortnum & Mason.

But Hello magazine reports the Queen now opts for a £6 Tesco version instead – which saves a lot of cash.

Last year, the Queen was forced to axe her annual Christmas gift-giving ceremony for staff for the first time in her reign.

The Monarch traditionally purchases a small gift for every member of the royal staff, which she personally presents alongside the Christmas pud, to thank the workers.

In the past, employees have been treated to photo frames and champagne flutes.

The Queen will be spending her first Christmas without her husband Prince Philip’s following his death earlier this year in April this year, aged 99.

She has faced a number of health concerns in recent weeks, after being hospitalised for a night in October and then having to cancel her appearance at the Remembrance Day service in Westminster after spraining her back.
