The new owners of a popular pub say they ‘can’t wait’ to welcome punters back to the much-missed venue – after having had just over a week to get ready for the big day.
As the Royal Mail Cart in Spalding, gears up to open its doors today (Thursday August 21) for the first time in nearly six months, the team has been working around the clock to return in time for the bank holiday weekend.
Due to a contract which allowed previous tenants to stay at the premises until August, new owner Padraig Hughes, was given the official handover last Tuesday (August 12).
He has teamed up with former general manager Sarah Cox and the duo was keen to re-open as soon as possible and bring the venue back to life for new and old faces.
Padraig said: “I would have been ready to take over the pub when it closed in March but the previous tenants had a contract to stay there until August.
“I’m excited to put my own mark on the pub now and we have lots of exciting things planned for the bank holiday weekend.
“We want people to come and enjoy themselves and we’re hoping to be busy.
“We’re trying to get as many hands on deck as possible and just have the last little jobs left to do – its go go go time.”
Hoping to create a community hot spot for local talent, good food and lively entertainment, Padraig has previously said he wants to ‘bring the buzz back to town’.
The venue has already got lots of events planned to highlight and support upcoming musicians and artists with various open mic evenings, song contests, live entertainment, karaoke and musical bingo.
During the opening night, local musician Dodge Rogers will kick the evening off with a performance of country songs and lively ballads from 5.30pm.
Rockin Pagan will be on stage late into the night from 8.30pm. The bar will be open from 4.30pm.
As Padraig and Sarah were eager to get the venue open in time for the public holiday, the pub will not be serving food until later down the line. However, the Mail Cart is set to host a barbecue over the weekend.
Monday (August 25) will also see the addition of Irish dancers and more live music.
Sarah and Padraig are currently in the process of talking to chefs to create a new menu which is set to incorporate fresh produce from local businesses and old-time favourites.
After the pub announced it was re-opening, following the closure in March, readers shared their excitement of the good news – with many looking forward to seeing its return.
