The Royal Mint drops big hint about a new Gruffalo coin

It was the must-have coin of 2019 with over 40,000 joining a waiting list to get their hands on one – and it’s coming back for Christmas.

The Royal Mint has dropped a big hint about a new Gruffalo 50p coin.

A new coin could be announced on 17 October after the Royal Mint reveals the Gruffalo is set to return alongside a teaser image of him holding a 50p piece.

The original Gruffalo coin, which cost £10 and was not released into circulation, was the big hit of the year with collectors and the children’s character is making a return with a big announcement scheduled for next week.

A second coin will likely feature a completely new design featuring characters from the children’s story and although designs are being kept top secret there is expected to be a clamour for the new coin once it is released.

The Gruffalo

The Gruffalo, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, has sold more than 14.5 million copies worldwide. It has featured on stamp collections and was turned into an animation starring the voices of James Corden, Robbie Coltrane, Helena-Bonham Carter and Rob Brydon.

A sequel, The Gruffalo’s Child, was also turned into an animated TV programme.

It is not the first time the Royal Mint has launched a successful themed coin. Peter Rabbit coins were launched last year and have quickly become collectible, with many being listed on eBay for multiple times the 50p’s value.

A Wallace and Gromit coin collection is also in the works, while Paddington Bear has also had the Royal Mint treatment in recent years.

The new Gruffalo coin is expected to be announced on 17 October and like the first coin it is likely to be uncirculated.
