Summary
- The Boeing 757 only operates 17% of all long-haul narrowbody flights in summer 2024.
- United Airlines’ Newark-Stockholm Arlanda route is the longest non-stop scheduled 757 service.
- But it is ‘only’ the fifth-longest non-stop narrowbody route globally.
The Boeing 757 continues to play a role in long-haul markets, defined here as covering 2,600 nautical miles (4,815 km) or more. Of course, airlines are choosing the much more fuel-efficient Airbus A321LR and 737 MAX, although they have far higher lease rates than the aging but characterful 757. Inevitably, 757 services have fallen considerably, from 45% of the total in summer 2019 to just 17% now. It is an inevitable technological evolution, as with all equipment.
The longest 757 flights: Summer 2024
The following table summarizes the longest services, with the Great Circle distance and maximum block (or scheduled) time provided. Notice how many of the entries have very similar distances, which means that the real-world distance will inevitably change the order.

This 737-operated service is intriguing…
United Airlines’ Newark-Stockholm Arlanda service takes the prize for distance, but it is ‘only’ the joint highest globally by block time this season. United would not have been first in March 2024: Moscow Vnukovo-Male, Maldives, operated by Russia’s Azur Air, was number one.
The maximum block time refers to either direction and at any point in the summer, even if it is only once.

A look at United to Sweden
Inherited from Continental, United served Newark-Stockholm until 2019 before returning in 2023. It has always been a 757-200 service. It is the world’s fifth-longest non-stop scheduled passenger narrowbody route in summer 2024, surpassed by:
- Newark-Milan (La Compagnie; light business class-only A321neo)
- Newark-Nice (La Compagnie; light business class-only A321neo)
- Montreal-Lima (Air Transat; A321LR)
- Montreal-Venice (Air Transat; just one A321LR flight on September 26)

According to the US Department of Transportation T-100 data, United carried 29,496 roundtrip passengers to/from Stockholm last year on the summer-seasonal service. It was the carrier’s sixth-thinnest European route from the US.
Newark-Stockholm had a seat load factor of 85.1%, above the carrier’s European average of 82.0%; remember, it is about how SLF is achieved. Booking data shows that about 65% of Stockholm passengers transferred to another United flight in Newark, with Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami the leading three origins and destinations.

United features in this list, too.
Coexists with SAS, but for how long?
United serves Newark-Stockholm alongside fellow Star Alliance partner SAS, which operates daily with the A330-300. However, SAS will become a SkyTeam member on September 1 and has already said network changes will occur. As such, it will likely end the route, presumably in favor of JFK. Given that Star is seemingly of limited importance between Newark-Stockholm, United will probably continue to serve Sweden.
