Thomas Markle has spoken out about Meghan Markle’s decision in not wanting to be referred to as ‘Meghan Markle’, as she clearly stated in her new Netflix show ‘With Love, Meghan’. Meghan’s father, who watched the series, has taken particular issue with Meghan correcting her friend Mindy Kaling on this issue.
He told the Daily Mail: “My mum loved Meghan very much, but she would be so disappointed to hear that Meghan no longer wants to use the name ‘Markle’. My mother was proud to be a Markle. So am I. Meghan never had a problem with the Markle name until she met Prince Harry.”
He also added: “Now I have to say, ‘I am Meghan Sussex’s dad.'”
In the series, Meghan declared that she is no longer Markle but Sussex – in a nod to her royal title, the Duchess of Sussex. Meghan also doubled down on the name, explaining how meaningful Sussex was to her.
Thomas Markle also disputed Meghan’s claim that she was a “latchkey kid” who ate TV dinners on a tray. According to Thomas Markle, Meghan lived with him full-time from age 11 until university.
He told the outlet: “We occasionally ate TV dinners, which family doesn’t? But I was working two jobs, so money was never an issue.”
He also explained how he would personally pick Meghan up from school daily or even send a car if he was busy, claiming “She was never a latchkey kid.”
The Duchess’s father also described the show as “out of touch with the real world” and suggested Meghan focus on more affordable recipes, given the cost of living crisis.
Mr Markle was cut off by his daughter after suffering two heart attacks on the eve of her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. “I still don’t know why she dumped me,” he explained, though he believes she never forgave him for missing her big day.
The former television lighting director has been effectively estranged from his youngest daughter since after her wedding to Harry in 2018.
He was due to fly to the UK to walk her down the aisle, but news of an agreement with the paparazzi paired with a heart attack days before the ceremony prevented him from attending.
Markle is not believed to have seen the Duchess of Sussex since – and he has repeatedly complained about never meeting his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
