Sir, Alice Thomson is right (“Westminster is our biggest rotten borough”, comment, Oct 26): our elected representatives daily prove themselves unfit for office by putting up with, and enjoying the benefits of, our “rotten political system”. Voters are being taken for fools in the reappointment of Suella Braverman a week after she was sacked for breaching the ministerial code and compromising national security, on the novel contention that her previous few weeks in office make her uniquely qualified to once again be home secretary. The only omission from Thomson’s list is the need to reform the House of Lords. There should be no place for hereditary legislators in the 21st century; a revising chamber should not be a club for cronies and superannuated
