Tottenham’s troubles continue as Emerson Royal is expected to MISS the rest of the season

Tottenham’s woes look set to continue after it was decided that Emerson Royal would require surgery after being injured while playing for Brazil, however fans will be buoyed by Richarlison’s expected return.

Royal was subbed off in stoppage time during Brazil’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Morocco on Saturday and complained off a knee injury after the match.

It has now been revealed that the full-back could miss the remainder of the Premier League season with his expected recovery from knee surgery set to take around six weeks.

The 24-year-old has made 22 Premier League appearances this season and was a favourite under Antonio Conte prior to his recent departure. But is now expected to play almost no part in the club’s end-of-season run-in.

Surgery on his meniscus will take place in London after he returned to England following international duty with Brazil.

That leaves Tottenham light in the full-back department with Ben Davies also expected to remain in the treatment room prior to the return of domestic football this weekend.

January signing Pedro Porro will now likely become a mainstay on the right-side of defence under interim boss Cristian Stellini given the lack of options available in that position.

However, while one Brazilian will take his place on the Spurs treatment table, another should be back in action sooner than expected after Richarlison’s latest troubles were ruled not as serious as first thought.

The striker has endured a difficult inaugural season at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium after making his £60m move from Everton in the summer, having been plagued by injuries and falling out with former boss Conte.

Richarlison previously missed the latter stages of the World Cup after injuring his hamstring while representing his country in Qatar, before eventually returning to action in January.

His Tottenham tenure then took another turn for the worst after he lashed out at Conte for not being given more minutes following the club’s Champions League exit against AC Milan.

The 25-year-old then enjoyed a run in the side before disaster struck in their recent 3-3 draw with Southampton that saw Richarlison hooked off just five minutes into the game.

He left the pitch in tears after looking uncomfortable during the warm up, before his injury became apparent during the match.

Sitting on the turf in dismay, Richarlison was consoled by his captain Harry Kane before he walked down the tunnel. Fortunately any concerns of a lengthy lay-off have proved not to be correct.

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris could return to action after featuring in a recent friendly

Richarlison will miss out on an emotional return to Everton when Spurs travel to Goodison Park on Monday and is targeting an April return to action.

Wing-back Ryan Sessegnon is another on the treatment table and close to being fit but the Everton clash will come too soon.

Captain Hugo Lloris could be in contention for Tottenham’s first match since Conte’s exit after he featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Ipswich last Thursday following a knee injury.

Rodrigo Bentancur (knee) and Yves Bissouma (ankle) remain long-term absentees as Spurs aim to finish a rollercoaster campaign on a high with Champions League qualification.
