Train strike: Train strikes in UK: Passengers brace for disruption on Christmas Eve

As railway workers in the UK are likely to continue their strike against wages, authorities have advised commuters to avoid travelling on Saturday unless it is absolutely essential. The Christmas Eve strike by Railway workers across the UK for wages is expected to have a significant effect on services.

Trains will cease to run at around 15:00 before the railway workers sit on strike at 18:00. Alongside the railway workers, postal workers and the border force staff will also partake in strikes.

The border force staff will strike till the end of the year but December 27 shall be an exception. Nevertheless, the staff shall engage in a warning strike if discourses on new pay deals are not initiated.

Unlike the Border Force Staff, the Railway personnel will engage in industrial action until 6:00 on the December 27. Network Rail, the company that manages the UK railways, said that the railway services will be significantly reduced on Christmas Eve.

Long-distance trains will depart significantly earlier, with some rail operators unable to operate at all. The final train from Leeds to London is at 09:45, 11:22 from London to Edinburgh, and 12:48 from London to Manchester.

Network Rail published a statement advising commuters to travel only if absolutely necessary. The train strikes are likely to increase traffic on the highways during an already congested time of year.
As the cost-of-living rises, railway workers are requesting salary increases. Inflation, or the rate at which prices rise, is running at about 11%, which is close to a 40-year high.

Several additional strikes are taking place in the United Kingdom. The postal employees at Royal Mail will also go on strike over salary issues. Along with National Highways Traffic Officers and London Bus Drivers, there will be countrywide strikes.

Aside from that, ambulance drivers, nurses, and driving examiners are all slated to strike at various times during the holiday season and into the new year.
