A trainee Lincolnshire police officer helped save a woman in her 80s from being scammed.
Joan was contacted by the fraudsters last month who claimed there was an issue with her bank account and that she needed to send them money for fingerprint checks, Lincolnshire Police said.
She sent £2,850 in cash to an address in London by special delivery.
After having second thoughts she visited her bank who contacted the police.
Student officer PC Nicholson visited Joan who had the address she sent the envelope of money to, and the Royal Mail tracking information which showed the money had not yet arrived.
After talking to a postman on the way back to the police station PC Nicholson was referred to the Mount Pleasant sorting office in London who were able intercept the package and return it.
Lincolnshire Police said Joan had her first ever ride in a police car as she was driven to the bank to pay the recovered money back into her account.
In a Facebook post, the force said: “Getting Joan’s money back has been a real team effort and we would like to send a heartfelt thank you to PC Nicholson and all our staff who assisted, as well as those from Barclays Bank and Royal Mail.
“They saw that what was an awful ordeal for an elderly lady, at least had a happy ending, showing there are good people who will go the extra mile to look after vulnerable members of our community.”
