Two men have been charged with the murder of football player Cody Fisher on Boxing Day.
Kami Carpenter, 21, and Remy Gordon, 22, have been charged with killing the 23-year-old at Crane nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham, just before midnight on Boxing Day, West Midlands police said Saturday.
The pair, both from Birmingham, were also charged with brawling and have been remanded in custody before appearing at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on January 2.
Police say Mr Fisher was stabbed on the dance floor of the nightclub, which had its license suspended for 28 days on Friday.
This followed allegations from West Midlands Police that there had been “serious management errors” at the site on the night of Mr Fisher’s death.
According to the police’s application for review, Mr Fisher died during “a fight on the dance floor” and officers who attended “described a scene of mayhem and evidence of drug use within the premises”.
Officers found a knife at the crime scene and an autopsy has confirmed that Mr. Fisher died of a stab wound.
He was remembered by his girlfriend, Jess Chatwin, in an emotional message posted on Twitter the day after his murder.
She wrote, “You didn’t deserve any of this. I’m so sorry this happened to you, my darling, please come home. Love you Cody Fisher forever.”
A statement released by police and attributed to Mr Fisher’s family said: “They have broken our hearts; I have lost my best friend. My family and I ask for privacy and respect at this heartbreaking time.”
Detective Chief Inspector Ian Ingram, of the West Midlands Police Department’s Homicide Division, said after the pair were charged: “This is an important development in our investigation as we seek justice for Cody, his family and friends.
“We have had fantastic support from the public who have really helped us with our investigations so far.
“However, we would still really like to hear from someone with information who hasn’t spoken to us yet. Any piece of information will help our investigation.”
A 22-year-old man, also arrested on suspicion of the murder, has been released on bail while investigations continue.
Four other people arrested on suspicion of aiding a perpetrator have also been released on bail.
