Two teenage boys have been arrested and charged over an alleged attempt to steal mail from a train in Lockerbie.
British Transport Police said a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were found on the Royal Mail service just before 2am on Tuesday.
Officers said a signal box had also been damaged which forced the closure of the West Coast Main Line between Lockerbie and Carlisle for several hours.
The pair were also charged with threatening and abusive behaviour as a result of the incident. BTP said no parcels had been stolen but a number had been “interfered with”.
A BTP spokesman said: “Officers were called to the line in Lockerbie at 1.42am on Tuesday, August 1 following reports that two young men had gained access to a Royal Mail train, damaging signalling equipment in the process.
“Officers attended and a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were located in a carriage and arrested.
“At this stage it’s not believed anything was stolen but a number of parcels in the carriage had been interfered with.
“Both young men have been charged with malicious mischief, theft and threatening and abusive behaviour.”
BTP added that inquiries were ongoing and is asking anyone with information about the incident to get in contact.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We are aware of this incident and are supporting the British Transport Police in their investigation.”
