he Prime Minister has faced calls from scientists to introduce a new three-metre social distancing rule in a bid to prevent rising coronavirus cases, it has been reported.

Scientists from the Sage scientific advisory panel want the Government guidance to change from “one metre plus” to “two metres plus”, the Daily Mai. reports. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said that ministers would “not rule out further action if needed”.

But the Home Secretary said: “A minority of people are putting the health of the nation at risk by not following the rules. 

“That is why we have spoken to councils in their role to play in enforcing the rules to save lives. 

“Our police officers are now moving more quickly to issue in the fines where people are clearly breaching coronavirus restrictions.  Nearly 45,000 fixed penalty notices have been issued across the UK.”

Liz Kendall lays into the Government over safe care homes

Shadow minister for social care Liz Kendall said: “Yesterday we learnt that only 118 care homes have been designated as safe to accept Covid patients from hospital when the Government promised in November there would be at least 500.

“Many care homes understandably don’t want to take Covid patients from hospital especially when insurers won’t cover the associated risks and whilst the Government has provided indemnity against such claims to the NHS, it has still not done so for social care, despite being repeatedly asked.”

NHS England reports 747 Covid deaths

NHS England reports a further 747 Covid-19 hospital deaths occurring over thirty dates.

This is a big increase on the 582 reported last Tuesday, 365 a fortnight ago and 405 deaths three weeks ago.

149 of those deaths occurred in London.

Families receiving ‘degrading’ food parcels treated ‘like dirt’, says mother

Kerry Wilks, from Redcar in north-east England, received a package at her youngest child’s school containing a loaf of bread, three yoghurts, a tin of beans, tuna, two potatoes, four pieces of fruit and two slices of cheese.

“Even the teaching staff were quite embarrassed by giving them out,” Ms Wilks, 38, told the PA news agency.

“I think what’s really bugged me about it is the fact that there’s two pieces of square cheese wrapped in cling film – I just find it so degrading.”

Chairman of the Commons Health Committee and the Tory former health secretary told the BBC: “There is the danger of a large number of additional, avoidable deaths, because of this horrible new strain.

 

“And, indeed, the strain from South Africa, which seems also to be taking root a little bit in the UK.”

 

Mr Hunt added: “I think the NHS will in the end find intensive care, critical care, beds for all those who need it. But it is on an absolute knife-edge.”
