UK politician accuses Sinn Féin of bizarre post box vandalism spree

When contacted for comment, a Sinn Féin spokesperson said: “This is news to us”.

A number of Royal Mail post boxes in England have been painted green and a local councillor has suggested it could be the work of someone involved in Sinn Féin, according to reports.

Yorkshire Live has said that several newly green post boxes have been spotted in the West Yorkshire area and that police are investigating the incidents.

Local conservative councillor Bernard McGuin is also reported by the outlet as suggesting the spraying of the traditionally red post boxes may be a stunt by Sinn Féin following the party’s recent success in the Northern Ireland Assembly Election.

“I am astonished by what has happened but it seems that someone involved in Sinn Fein could be involved here,” he told Yorkshire Live.

“Residents consider what has been done as vandalism.

“Hopefully the boxes will be returned to the red of tradition. I hope we have an answer from Royal Mail about what is going on.

“As a dour Yorkshire Conservative, I miss the red ones.”

Following McGuin’s comments, JOE reached out to Sinn Féin for a response.

“This is news to us,” a spokesperson for the party replied.

A Royal Mail spokesperson, meanwhile, told JOE:

“We do not know who repainted these post boxes and have reported this matter to the police.

“We will be repainting the boxes in the iconic red as soon as possible.”
