Ukrposhta opens high-capacity sorting terminal in Odesa

Ukraine’s national postal operator is boosting its processing and delivery capacity with the opening of a new automated logistics terminal in Odesa.

The facility includes sorting lines for small and large postal items and can process three parcels per second – equating to up to 270,000 parcels per day. Together with the restructuring of logistics routes, this will make it possible to deliver shipments to customers in Odesa, Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts within 24 hours of sorting.

The opening of the Odesa terminal is part of Ukrposhta’s development and modernization strategy launched in 2021. So far, the company has installed 17 automated lines in seven cities across Ukraine – nine for small postal items and eight for large parcels. During the next two months, the company will open new terminals, logistics centers and depots with innovative equipment in cities across Ukraine.

“Odesa region is the place where I was born and raised, but the opening of the Odesa terminal is important for the whole south of the country,” Ukrposhta CEO, Igor Smelyansky, commented. “Its particularity is that parcels for three oblasts – Odesa, Kherson and Mykolaiv – are sorted here.

“By arranging fully automated sorting lines, Ukrposhta can respond adaptively to changes in the military situation and, by reducing the possibility of sorting errors, deliver shipments to their destinations quickly and accurately. According to the transformation strategy, Ukrposhta not only automates sorting but also rebuilds logistics routes to deliver faster across the country. Our goal is a real digital revolution in sorting and logistics this year.”

Ukrposhta plans to complete the automation of all seven terminals and 16 logistics centers in the country in 2024. It has already installed a new automated sorting system at its Kyiv-Pravyi logistics terminal (pictured above), which will enable it to process 18,000 parcels per hour and about 400,000 postal items per day.
