Birmingham city centre holds a hidden layer that many locals never get to explore. While the city may not boast a network of Medieval tunnels, it does have a few modern ones tucked away from public view.
The most renowned of these is the Mailbox Tunnels. Today’s Mailbox is a hub for some of the city’s most high-end shops and eateries, but beneath it lies a sight unseen by most Brummies – a testament to its past as the heart of all mail deliveries in Birmingham.
This tunnel was utilised by Royal Mail workers to transport deliveries from the sorting office, established in 1970, to New Street Station. Additionally, there are the BT Tower Tunnels, a classified bunker constructed post-World War II in preparation for a potential nuclear attack.
