After Royal Mail retaliated against their strikes, the best response was from a postal worker union.
Over 115,000 UK postal workers will strike for four more days in late August and early September. The Communications Workers Union (CWU), has voted in favor of further industrial action to improve working conditions.
Royal Mail claimed it offered a 5.5 percent pay increase to CWU workers. This is the largest increase in CWU workers’ salaries in many years. However, the CWU claims that the offer was actually a 2 percent increase after taking inflation into account.
“The ongoing attempts of Royal Mail Group to whittle away people’s hard-won working conditions will be met with fierce opposition,”Terry Pullinger is the deputy general secretary (postal), of the CWU. “In these times, working people need more security on the job, not less, and we won’t be backing down until we secure an acceptable solution for our members.”
“Postal workers in this country are being pushed to the edge, but there can be no doubt that they will fight the planned erosion of their workplace rights with determination,” said Dave Ward, the union’s general secretary.
