University celebrates diversity and inclusion with top award

It won It won University of the Year  at the tenth annual awards ceremony, held  at the Hilton London Metropole,  recognising its outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion in apprenticeship education.

The event welcomed over 700 guests and celebrated a decade of championing apprenticeships and inclusive learning.

Since it started in 2015, the awards have  engaged more than 3,000 apprentices, 500 employers, and 100 learning providers, driving transformation across every major sector. 

Wolverhampton’s recognition comes in the wake of its appointment as a patron of the Multicultural Apprenticeship and Skills Alliance in 2024, cementing its leadership in widening participation and promoting equality across all apprenticeship programmes.

The university stood alongside major organisations such as AstraZeneca UK, Royal Mail, and the BBC who were all honoured for their contributions to apprenticeships. The evening also spotlighted inspiring apprentice stories of resilience – overcoming homelessness, illness, and systemic barriers.

Jenny Cannon, deputy head of the School of Health and Wellbeing, said: “As the university of opportunity, we are proud to break down barriers to education and create pathways for every learner to thrive. 

“This award reflects our unwavering commitment to diversity, inclusion, and widening participation – ensuring that apprenticeships open doors for talent from all communities.”
