‘Unknown substance’ found at Boreham Royal Mail sorting office, fire service confirm

An ‘unknown substance’ discovered at a Royal Mail sorting office has prompted a large emergency services incident.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service says firefighters are currently working to identify the substance found at the sorting office in Winsford Way, Boreham.

Emergency services have swarmed the area in Boreham this morning to deal with the incident.

At least four ambulances, numerous fire engines and police cars were at the scene.

The area was taped off by the fire service.

Staff at the site were temporarily stopped from going into work as the incident was dealt with. Some were allowed into the canteen but areas of the building remained closed off.

A Royal Mail employee who has worked at the sorting office since January and wishes to remain anonymous said: “Royal mail aren’t ones for overreacting so for this to be shut and have every emergency service here something is going on.

“They appear to be letting the late shift out at the moment but I’m not sure what’s going on. Nothing like this usually happens here.”

Essex Police, East of England Ambulance Service and Royal Mail have all been contacted for comment.
