Up to 40,000 jobs on offer in time for Christmas

Christmas is not too far away and if you’re looking for work over the festive period there are thousands of jobs to be had.

From mail sorters, to delivery drivers and retail staff, there are plenty of jobs you can apply for in time for Christmas.

There are jobs across Merseyside with a number of big companies who are preparing for the busy festive season.

Supermarkets giants such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Morrisons are taking on huge numbers in perpetration for Christmas and the extremely busy time for retail.

We have rounded up some of the jobs and employment opportunities you can apply for – but you’ll need to be quick with many of the applications closing soon.

Royal Mail

Royal Mail is among the companies recruiting for the festive period and arguably one of the most in demand.

There are a number of jobs for the festive season across Merseyside within the company.

One job is a Seasonal Mail Sorter where if you’re hired you will be working from the North West Parcel sorting centre in Knowsley.

You will help deal with the increased flow of parcels and letters flying through the warehouse.

As a Mail Sorter, you’ll be responsible for unloading mail and parcels from the vans and moving them through the warehouse while ensuring they arrive at their destination safely.

The job advert states: “Unsurprisingly, Christmas is the busiest time of year at Royal Mail.

“And with so many parcels and letters flowing through our warehouse, we always need a few thousand extra hands! Every year over the holiday season, temporary flexible workers from all walks of life help us to get everything where it needs to go.”

In fact, during a single shift, you could sort over a million items with your team – so they’re looking for someone flexible, committed and enthusiastic.

A bit of body strength wouldn’t hurt either as you’ll be pushing trolleys weighing up to 250kgs plus lifting and moving mailbags weighing up to 11kg.

They added while you don’t need to have worked for Royal Mail before experience in warehouse or sorting work is a bonus.

Pay

  • £11.40 p/h (days) to £13.70 p/h (nights).

Most sites offer a range of shifts, so finding one that suits you should be simple. Typical shift patterns include:

  • Earlies: Tuesday to Saturday, 06:00 – 14:00
  • Lates: Monday to Friday, 14:00 – 22:00
  • Nights: Monday to Friday, 22:00 – 06:00
  • Weekends: Saturday Only, either 14:00 – 22:00 or 22:00 – 06:00

Amazon is recruiting for jobs in the Merseyside area that come with an attractive bonus – but only if you apply before the cut off date.

The online retail giant has a warehouse in Haydock, St Helens, and it is currently recruiting new people to work on the sortation team.

A decent level of physical fitness will be required as you’ll need to unload, lift and move products as well as scan and sort packages.

After training, you will be able to move products using forklifts and power pallets.

No experience is needed as you’ll receive on the job training.

But don’t wait long to apply – If you start your role before October 30 you’ll also receive a £1,500 sign on bonus.

Pay is £10 per hour for day time shifts (2pm – 11.30m) and £11 per hour for night time shifts (11pm – 6.30am).

This increases to £11.71 per hour between Sunday, October 10 and Saturday, January 1.

There are also increased overtime rates the more hours you do.

Amazon said the role offers competitive rates of pay, higher than many similar jobs; flexible shift patterns plus free hot drinks and affordable meals.

Although no experience is necessary, there are certain skills you will need to carry out the role. They include:

  • You may stand and walk for a long time, this could be more than 8 hours per shift.
  • You may need to lift and move products that weigh up to 23kg.
  • You need to be ok to lift, bend, twist, kneel and crouch.
  • You need to be ok to handle a full range of Amazon products, including alcohol and pork products.

Domino’s announced it will be hiring 8,000 new drivers to cope with the Christmas rush.

In June, Domino’s said it was hiring 5,000 cooks and delivery drivers, as staff who joined during the pandemic headed back to their old jobs after Covid restrictions eased.

Domino’s said it offered good long-term prospects, as more than 90% of store managers had started in the kitchen or as delivery drivers.

It also stressed that most of the jobs on offer were permanent and not just for Christmas.

Domino’s said they had opened five new stores in the last quarter totalling 18 new stores this year alone.

Dominic Paul, Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our supply chain continues to deliver outstanding results, despite the well-publicised inflationary pressures and challenging labour market, which is testament to the skill and dedication of our teams.

“While we see these pressures continuing into 2022, our success in managing them to date provides us with confidence that our growth momentum will be sustained.

“We’re proud to be creating new jobs to support that growth and today are announcing that we are recruiting 8,000 new colleagues across the UK and Ireland.”

The pizza company said the good health of the company has been boosted by their new app which now accounts for 42% of pizza sales.

Costa

More than 2,000 new jobs are set to be available as Costa prepares for a busy festive season, with more stores opening and higher consumer demand.

Bosses of the coffee chain also said they will give its staff a 5% pay rise.

The new pay increase will see all store staff earn at least 45p an hour extra taking the minimum wage to £9.36.

The company’s “Barista Maestros” will see their pay go up by 65p per hour, taking the minimum for these more experienced roles to £10.29.

Top rates of pay, depending on location and experience, will go up to £11.29 an hour from £10.64.

The company said the average store employee, working between 20 and 40 hours a week, will see their annual take-home pay go up by between £500 and £900, while those receiving a 65p rise will see an increase of between £700 and £1,400.

Neil Lake, managing director of Costa Coffee UK & Ireland, said: “Our team members are the heart of our business and, as we continue to emerge stronger from the pandemic, this 5% pay increase is one way we are able to show our thanks to them.

“Our teams have been through the most challenging year and a half in living memory and have shown incredible passion, resilience and commitment as they continue to serve perfectly-crafted cups of Costa coffee to consumers across the country.

“We are committed to putting our team members first, investing in their safety and wellbeing and their long-term development, ensuring we remain a great place to work for all our current team members and the 2,000 team members we’ll be welcoming in the coming months.”

In Liverpool and across Merseyside there are jobs for roles such as baristas, barista maestros and store managers.

Aldi

Aldi is hiring more than 1,500 people to work in its UK stores on a temporary basis over the Christmas period.

The supermarket is looking for people to support its permanent colleagues by working on the checkouts, replenishing stock, as well as picking and packing orders made through its click and collect service.

The 1,500 temporary Christmas store roles are in addition to the 2,000 permanent jobs Aldi is also looking to fill by the end of this year as it continues to push ahead with plans to open an average of one new store a week, and a similar number of permanent jobs are planned for next year.

In addition, Aldi is currently recruiting across its 11 Regional Distribution Centres around the UK for a number of permanent roles, including Warehouse Selectors, Logistics Assistants and Lorry Drivers.

Aldi has also today confirmed it will once again keep all stores shut on Boxing Day as a thank you to colleagues.

The supermarket has always remained closed on Boxing Day, ever since opening in the UK over 30 years ago.

Store Assistants earn an industry-leading minimum hourly rate of up to £10.57 nationally and £11.32 inside the M25.

Morrisons

Morrisons is looking to recruit 3,000 new colleagues ahead of the festive season in order to meet increased demand at Christmas.

The supermarket is looking to recruit colleagues for its distribution centres and manufacturing sites across the country.

The roles available range from warehouse and production operatives, to pickers and packers as well as other skilled roles such as fork lift truck drivers.

Full training will be provided for all positions and so no prior experience is required.

Morrisons has also joined the Kickstart scheme meaning it welcomes applications from 16-24-year-olds who are receiving universal credit.

Earlier this year, Morrisons became the first UK supermarket to guarantee pay of at least £10 per hour and colleagues also benefit from a 10% staff discount as well as flexible hours and shift patterns to suit.

Tesco is recruiting ‘festive colleagues’ across a number of stores in the UK.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s is creating 22,000 seasonal jobs across the UK.

Seasonal Sainsbury’s and Argos colleagues will help throughout the store, serving customers, keeping shelves stocked and picking, packing and delivering online orders.

There will be 14,500 Sainsbury’s and Argos colleague roles available in stores, including 500 Customer and Trading Manager positions, 3,000 online delivery driver positions on offer as well as 4,500 warehouse and logistics openings which include agencies and third parties.

There are also 180 Contact Centre opportunities.

Jobs will be available across the country from October 1, four weeks earlier than last year to help colleagues settle in.

Sainsbury’s is also introducing a new incentive payment to recruit more Argos and Groceries Online delivery drivers for the festive season; both new and existing drivers could earn up to an additional £500 for fulfilling shifts over the busy Christmas period.

Temporary colleagues will work up until January 8 2022 on fixed-term contracts of between three and 12 weeks.

At Next, helpers are needed for the busy Christmas season.

People working the festive season get first pick of sale stock and there is from three up to 12 weeks of work.

If you are hired, this will include working Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and Monday, December 27.

The shoes store is also looking for seasonal workers.

The job advert reads: You’ll build a rapport with the customer by asking questions about what they want.

“Then you’ll give great advice to give reassurance and close the sale – maybe suggesting accessories when appropriate.

“In short, you’ll play an active role in every stage of the end-to-end selling process.

“With our first-class training, including coaching, observations and product knowledge, you’ll have what it takes to meet targets and performance standards and be the very best you can be.

“You will also find yourself playing an active role in keeping the store neat and tidy as well as lending a hand in the stockroom.”

In Liverpool, the shop is hiring for a seasonal worker.

The job ad said: “The Perfume Shop Recruitment 2021 Christmas Sales Assistant Job Opening in Liverpool.

“Demonstrate products, and assist customers using your product knowledge.

“Work with our store teams, greet customers and deliver a first-class customer experience.

“Be able to engage with customers on the shop floor, confidently and professionally Be friendly, engaging and approachable, and be able to build great rapport with customers.”
