Peter McGregor, who had no known family, spent the last four years of his life at Townsend House.
The team at the care home knew Mr McGregor had served in the armed forces, so with the support of funeral celebrant Andy Hansen, they contacted the Royal Air Force Association and Royal British Legion to ensure he received a fitting farewell.

He was also honoured by standard bearers from the Royal Air Force Association and Royal British Legion, a bugler, representatives from RAF Brize Norton and RAF Benson, a biker escort, and carers from Townsend House.

Russ, a member of the 617 Squadron, said: “Our veterans should never be sent off alone.”
Jacqueline Smith, activities co-ordinator at Townsend House, added: “The ceremony was a touching and fitting farewell, complete with an inspiring eulogy that reflected Peter’s service and sacrifice.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to all who contributed to making this farewell so special. Peter would have been proud.”
Following the service, mourners gathered at Townsend House for the wake.
